I have a long and hapazard history with Spanish, unquestionably the language I have the greatest competence in after English. I had early immersive exposure for the few months my family lived in Catalunya as a child, and later skipped a bunch of language classes to get a degree in Spanish in university. In between, I developed a great deal of my vocabulary and language sense through listening to and translating music. In university I discovered Federico Garcia Lorca, and set my hand to translating some of his poems that I either wanted to understand better, or felt that the translator in my bilingual copy of his selected works did a mediocre job with.
